This was the latest viral story from Hong Kong, a German hand grenade was found in the potatoes imported from France by the local branch of a Japanese brand.

International audiences may found this amusing in various way, exotic location, the long distance of shipping. Even the Anglo-Saxons media branded the grenade as bombe de terre, a pun from the French word of potato itself.

Though the Brits really left some of their stereotypes against the French among people in Hong Kong, as it is inevitable that most Hongkongers learn about the world by English.

Generally they find this bomb in the shipment thing pretty ridiculous. But netizens saw the positive side of it, even find more trust towards the Japanese brand.

We could find some online comments suggest the incident is so French, so the potato imports are really coming from France.

Confidence crisis on food

This strange reassurance is actually a reflection of mistrust to towards the products from Communist China. Food poisoning is not uncommon among the news cycle in the current World’s 2nd largest economy. People here in Hong Kong witness people hording in from China, have weekly or even daily shopping tours, targeting any food and products from anywhere beyond Hong Kong and China.

So companies in Hong Kong, try to avoid printing Made in China on their products. Local Hongkonger generally very suspicious about these label.

When this Japanese brand got such bombe de terre in their raw material import, literally no one actually questioned how dangerous or careless the company is, more or less just light hearted ridicule, and strangely some more reasurance.
